VFS presents a new video with Dr. Tom Chiller, MD, MPHTM, Deputy Chief of the Centers for Disease Control’s Mycotic Diseases Branch.
Valley Fever in Washington State – VFS and Dr. Tom Chiller (Valley Fever Survivor Educational Film Series Part 7)
When three people, two dogs and a horse were known to be infected with Valley Fever from 2010-11 in Eastern Washington, it wasn’t necessarily something that would redraw the decades-old Valley Fever map. It could easily have been assumed that they either were infected during travel and Valley Fever simply activated later, or perhaps they inhaled spores off of something that had been shipped through the Southwest. DNA positive identification of Coccidioides immitis from Benton County soil samples in 2014, however, seem to show a major change in this disease’s epidemiology. How is that possible? Will the maps be redrawn on this disease? How will this affect how the country deals with Valley Fever? Dr. Chiller will describe the CDC’s work in Washington State and beyond as we consider the recent developments.
